Beware: Samsung Galaxy Siii Explodes (Reason Still Unknown)

There was a time when the exploding iPhones got huge media coverage. Today the case is quite similar – the hottest phone on the market – the Galaxy S III – became even hotter to the point of catching fire.

The unpleasant incident occurred in Ireland. A white Galaxy S III bought from Carphone Warehouse was attached to a car mount when suddenly white flames started coming from its bottom. Here are some pictures:

Samsung Galaxy SIII I9300 Explodes

The dead Galaxy S III is all over the internet already. Luckily the guy is unharmed and he got a new phone directly from Samsung, while the problematic unit has been sent to the company’s headquarters for detailed investigation.

It’s just an isolated case for now and we hope it stays that way. Samsung has already released an official statement:

“There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung GALAXY SIII that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question.

Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation. We are committed to providing our customers with the safest products possible and are looking at this seriously.” source

Which Is Better: Samsung Galaxy S III vs. Galaxy S II

With the dust still settling from one of the most exciting smartphone battles the industry has seen, and clouds of stardust swirling around a complete review, it’s time to step back and take a sober look at two great phones. Two glorious chapters in Android history, two milestones on Samsung’s rise to the top.

Samsung Galaxy S III vs. Galaxy S II

Keeping a cool head about gadgets like these two isn’t the easiest of things but one has to be calm and rational in matters of upgrade and, ultimately, money. To get the obvious out of the way, the Samsung Galaxy S III boasts a massive HD screen and double the CPU cores of its predecessor. It’s as simple as that – and more than enough for most people. What we’re trying to do here is look closer at the differences between the two generations and find out what the upgrade costs and what it’s worth.

Diffrence between Samsung Galaxy S III vs. Galaxy S II

The Samsung Galaxy S III is clearly the better equipped phone – it bests the S II on practically every count – but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right Galaxy S for you.

Here’s a quick list we threw together to help you get an idea of what Samsung improved on with the Samsung Galaxy  S III, but also why an Samsung Galaxy S II might still be a smart buy.

Why the Galaxy S III is better?

  • Bigger, 720p screen
  • Not slimmer, but the thickness is much more uniform
  • Quad-core processor, faster graphics
  • S Beam, S Voice, Smart stay, smart alarm, 50GB Dropbox and so on
  • Better battery backup
  • Snapping photos while recording FullHD video
  • GLONASS support
  • Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • 64GB storage option (comes with a price premium)
  • Why the Galaxy S II is still good enough
  • Cheaper to buy new, plenty of second-hand deals too
  • Smaller, lighter device
  • SuperAMOLED Plus screen (has a full set of subpixels)
  • Equally good camera with 8MP stills, 1080p video
  • Same amount of RAM – 1GB
  • Regular SIM slot

Of all the reasons listed, price is perhaps the biggest ace up the Galaxy S II’s sleeve. Yes, it’s gotten old, but it remains a very solid device, albeit in an upper-midrange position. Then there’s the vibrant developer community around the S II, which might give it Android 5.0 Jellybean, even if Samsung decide not to do that officially.

On the other hand, if you are after the crème de la crème in Android, the list is pretty short and the SGS III is on it. Samsung have treated the Galaxy S III as a droid royalty and the smartphone is getting plenty of cool accessories (wireless charging, AllShare Cast, the Pebble), fancy software (S Voice, etc.) and it’s practically a lock for a Jellybean update.

To get the full picture, we’ll need to look at hardware and software, performance and camera. The next page kicks things off with a look at the hardware and the screen.  source

ICS update for the Sony Xperia arc and Xperia Neo

Two more members of the Xperia family are joining the Ice Cream Sandwich club – congratulations to the Sony Ericsson (well, technically Sony now) Xperia arc and Xperia neo. What they’re getting is Android 4.0.4 – the latest available from Google – but they’re sticking with an older kernel – 2.6.32. The update is being rolled out in stages, so it might not be available for your unit just yet. Owners of an Xperia arc can check this page to see if the ICS update is available for their unit (you need to check the phone’s SI number printed under the battery) and Xperia neo owners can have a look here.
The remaining Xperia phones from the 2011 lineup – Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Live with Walkman – are also to get the 4.0.4 update starting some time this week, though we haven’t seen reports of updated phones yet (post in the comments if you do get the update). The Xperia PLAY will not be updated as previously reported.

ICS update for the Sony Xperia arc and Xperia Neo
Xperia phones that already got the ICS update (arc S, neo V and ray) will also be getting the Android 4.0.4 treatment soon (what they received was 4.0.3).
The NXT series will take a bite of the Ice Cream Sandwich starting with the Sony Xperia S (update expected in late June), with the Xperia P and Xperia U following in Q3.

The walkman part of this phone is good. The screen is too easy to break. I cracked 2 screens without being hard on it. Durability is not one of its features. Pictures are not great either. Unlocked Samsung B2100 Water Resistant CAMERA GSM Phone

The Korean mobile phone maker has recently unveiled a new rugged handset, namely the durable The new device comes with features and specifications that are meant to make it a great option for those users who are fond of adventures. The new Samsung B2100 Xplorer is able to offer them tri-band GSM (850/900/1900MHz) connectivity, as well as support for EDGE data.  Samsung claim that the B2100 is fully waterproof. Well, is it really? We put it to the test in this video and the answer is “”yes”". As long as all the covers are firmly in place, then there appears to be no water ingress at all and the handset works just fine under water. The tough casing does create another problem. Because everything is fully sealed, audio quality is slightly muffled. On a normal phone, the microphone and speakers are mounted internally and covered by a mesh or small holes in the casing to allow sound to travel easily. On the B2100, everything is sealed up and there is a slight but noticeable drop in audio quality as a result.

Samsung B2100 Unlocked Quadband Water Resistant CAMERA GSM PhoneAccording to Samsung, the new B2100 Xplorer has been developed to meet Military Standard 810F compliance for durability, and it offers resistance to dust, bumps, scratches and moist. In addition, the new mobile phone also comes with a comfortable grip and includes anti-shock urethane material, which is meant to make the device withstand harsh outdoor environments. The new Samsung B2100 Xplorer also packs water submersible features, being able to resist up to 30 minutes in one-meter-deep waters. Even if it sports a rugged form factor, the new handset is only 0.7 inches thick, which would make it the thinnest submersible phone on the market.    $92.99 only

The Samsung SGH-T119 had a low profile when it made its appearance at CES 2009. As a simple candy-bar phone for making calls, it couldn’t quite compete with such T-Mobile siblings as the Motorola Renew W233 and the second version of the T-Mobile Shadow. But as basic it may be, it’s worth considering if you just need a phone for making calls. Except for a couple of complaints, it offers a simple, easy-to-use design that should be accessible to cell phone newbies. Buy Samsung T749 Highlight GSM Phone, Hot Deals, price and Reviews

The Samsung T749 Highlight takes a few design liberties that reflect its entry-level image. It’s a bit rounder and sleeker than many of its Samsung touch-screen brethren and it shows a pattern on its rear cover. At 4.27 inches tall by 2.11 inches wide by 0.54 inch thick, the Highlight a bit chunkier than some of its counterparts, but we welcome the extra girth. Indeed, it has a comfortable feel in the hand, and it fits easily in a pocket or bag. The display measures 3 inches, which is just on the edge of what we consider acceptable for a touch screen. However, for what it lacks in size, it makes up in resolution. The display shows 16 million colors (400×240 pixels), which results in bright colors, sharp photos, and vibrant graphics. The Samsung SGH-T749 Highlight from T-Mobile looks like just another touchscreen phone, at first glance. The pocket-friendly feature phone measures in at 109mm x 53mm x 13mm (4.3in x 2.1in x 0.5in), but weighs a slightly hefty 105g (3.7oz). The 3 megapixel camera is positioned at the top of the back of the phone, with the speakerphone grille right next to it. The entire back cover of the phone can be removed to reveal the generous 1200mAh battery. The SIM card slot and microSD card slot are both located underneath the battery.

ICS Update Available for Sony Ericsson Cell Phones

Sony’s released a beta version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Xperia family Phones. It’s allowing eager-beaver Android fans to get a scoop of Android 4.0 ahead of the official release. Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us. The transition from Android 2.3 to Android 4.0, however, always seems to have been stalled due problems ever since it was released five months back and most of the manufacturers are yet to launch ICS on their existing devices. ICS, which builds on the things people love most about Android, such as easy multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, resizable widgets and deep interactivity, is a simple, beautiful and useful OS that adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing. Sony has detailed the updates a little more,

ICS Update For Sony ericsson Xperia Phones

ICS Update For Sony ericsson Xperia Phones

Today Sony’s offering up more details about exactly when each of its 2011 (and 2012) Xperia handsets will be getting the latest version of Android. The manufacturer had previously promised updates during Q1, but with just two days of the current quarter remaining, it should come as no surprise that things haven taken a little longer than anticipated. The first Sony devices to get ICS will be the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray, starting mid-April. Next up it’s the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active and SE Live with Walkman, which will get ICS from “the end of May/early June. If you’ve just bought a brand new Xperia S, though, you’ll be in for a much longer wait. Sony’s new European flagship isn’t expected to get ICS until late Q2. As we said in our review, the Xperia S is a phone which sorely needs that ICS update, and early adopters will no doubt be frustrated to find themselves at the back of the line. Sony also revealed that for 2011 Xperia phones, ICS will be an optional upgrade rather (through the PC Companion app) than a automatic over-the-air update. This is similar to the strategy adopted by Sony Ericsson with the Xperia X10′s Gingerbread update. Writing on its Developer World Blog, Sony explains that ICS may actually degrade performance for some users due to increased memory use, and changes to the way SQL databases are handled, so it’s not forcing the update on anyone in an OTA.
